In a learning society, learning is a journey, not a destination, a journey with peaks and valleys, breakthroughs and letdowns, a continuous cycle of never-ending exploration, followed by a few deeper periods of mastery.

IMAGINATION STATION - NOVEMBER 12 + 13th

The Downtown Festival is just around the corner (Nov 12 and 13th) and that means once again, we need volunteers for the Imagination Station area.  This is a children's art area that we (the art education area) have sponsored since 1989.  You can see a short video on last year's event here:

http://animoto.com/play/bd0WBYyzEI9GTE3c4T16uA

To make this "happen" we need around 40 volunteers over the two days, for morning (9:00 am to 1:00 pm) and afternoons (1:00 pm to 5:00 pm).  Please find some time to join us!  We especially need people on Sunday.

You'll have a great time giving something back to the community.  Also, you'll receive a cool "imagination station"  t-shirt, plus a letter and photo from me for your teaching portfolio.

There is a paper sign-up sheet in Norman Hall. OR, you can go to the following web page and sign up.   (Note: when you click on one of the "sign up" buttons, it takes you to a page where it asks you to register for an account.  You don't have to do this.  One of the options is to just leave your name.)  If you do sign up online I'll bring your t-shirt downtown.

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/imagination1

Once again, PLEASE come and join us.  We need more volunteers!

Florida Art Education Association (FAEA)
Fall 2010 Conference
October 14-16, 2010

The Florida Hotel and Conference
At the Florida Mall 1500 Sand Lake Road, Orlando, FL 32809

On Friday afternoon, October 15, art education students will have the opportunity to meet the District Visual Art Supervisors at a Meet and Greet from 1:00 – 3:00 for students. These administrators are the ones, who for the most part hire, new visual arts teachers, certainly all have a great deal of input into the hiring process.

FAEA hopes that UF students will take the opportunity to meet these administrators and to hear about each of the districts and their hiring processes. Our district hired 15 new teachers this year and most did not receive their education in Florida. We would love to hire teachers from Florida.

HEALTH & BUBBLES
As flu epidemic and pandemics continue in the headlines educators will have an opportunity to be proactive. This along with, I have to admit, being fascinated with bubbles since infancy spurred me to look for a few sites for children's art and science activities dealing with health.

Here are few resource for Elementary teachers.

The SDA kids Corner - Enhancing health and the quality of life through sustainable cleaning products and practices.

The Scub Club - Sponsored by NSF an organization widely recognized for its scientific and technical expertise in the health and environmental sciences.

Sink Those Germs: Wash Your Hands - Promote hand washing to youth with activities such a the Glitter Experiment.

hygiene-educ.com - Hygiene education website proposed by the Institut Pasteur (ages 6-11)

Additional Link for Educators
The government has put out a site on updated health information Guidance for Schools for the Fall Flu Season for prevention so that schools can plan on how to deal with issues in a timely manner. A good place to check as we move through the fall semester.

Cyborg Feeling” by Lauren D'Apuzzo
Through use of a soundscape the jacket is meant to convey the tentative public and private relationships generated between humans and the cybernetic technologies keeping them alive.

"Shelter" by Meridith Coen

This terracotta sculpture is a personal expression of refuge. A pretend fortress constructed from soft blankets and sheets becomes a home with in a home, a place where I felt protected as a child from the physical elements as well as judgment from others and myself. It is a private place that exists for the sake of imagination and creativity alone, a notion we tend to forget as we get older.

Alternative Jobs

I just want to remind all you awesome Art Ed teachers that there ARE alternative jobs out there! I graduated in May and now I'm teaching Art (and English) in an alternative wilderness boarding school on the edge of the DuPont State Forest in Western North Carolina. In many ways this is my dream job - but like any dream, unexpected things happen ALL THE TIME. It keeps me on my toes. Be careful what you visualize, you may get what you want.

Take care, all and keep…
